OLYMPIA, WA – In recognition of her
legislative and community accomplishments,
the Centralia College Diversity Project
honored State Rep. Phyllis Gutiérrez Kenney
(D-Seattle) with a monument on the college’s
tower.
The event took place at Centralia College
Clocktower, 600 Centralia College Blvd,
Centralia, WA.
Gutiérrez Kenney is the daughter of Hispanic
immigrants and she grew up immersed in the
plight of migrant workers. Since 1997, she has
served the people of the 46th Legislative
District in the Washington State House of
Representatives. She currently chairs the
House Committee on Community and
Economic Development and Trade, and was
the former chair of the Higher Education
Committee for many years.
She diligently works to help minorities achieve
success and is an advocate for education and
the rights of individuals in the state and
nationwide.

Morning Northwest each weekday, alongside Kalae
Chock and Mark Peterson. He was born and raised in
Miami Florida.
Mike Puerto Rican but was heavily influenced by
the Cuban culture of Miami. He left Miami in 1999
to pursue his television career.
He began his television career in Columbia,
Missouri, while attending the Missouri School of
Journalism.
Mike comes to KXLY from Omaha, Nebraska, where
he was an anchor and reporter. While in Omaha,
Mike was recognized by the Associated Press for his
breaking news coverage of a massive oil fire.
Previously, Mike worked as an anchor and reporter
in Lincoln, Nebraska, where he won an AP award for
his series on the Lincoln Saltdogs minor league
baseball.
Mike is a graduate of North Carolina State
University. He was a standout pitcher for the
Wolfpack baseball team, and later played for the
minor league Allentown Ambassadors. An arm injury
ended Mikes baseball career and set him on a new
path toward journalism.
Mike has been happily married to his wife for ten
years. They have two children. Mike’s wife is a
graduate of Eisenhower High School in Yakima
and the family is excited to be finally living in
Washington.
