COM Port Conflict Trouble Shooting Guide

This Windows 95 application note can be used for all ACTiSYS devices including:

ACT-IR200L ACT-IR220L ACT-IR3S+ ACT-101 cable

This application note will resolve most serial port conflicts for the above mentioned ACTiSYS devices. For more detailed information about serial ports please contact the computer system dealer or refer to your computer manual.

In order to use ACTiSYS serial device there must be one free serial port. Normally this 9 or 25 pin connector is located in the back of the computer Plug your ACTiSYS serial device into the connector and follow the simple steps described below.

  1. Usually the conflict is caused by the mouse or modem. If you have a mouse it is usually assigned to COM1. COM2 or COM4 is usually assigned to a modem. We recommend you use COM4 for the modem and COM2 for the ACTiSYS serial device. You can verify which COM port is being used by your modem by going into Control Panel (under START in Windows 95). Then double click on the modem icon. Next select (single click) your selection and choose properties. From here you can see or change your Modem COM port address.
  2. In most cases the default addresses and IRQ value for the serial ports are shown below:

    COM Port Address IRQ

    COM1 03F8 4
    COM2 02F8 3
    COM3 03E8 4
    COM4 2E8 3

Note: If you use a serial device that connects COM 1 or COM3 (or COM2 or COM4) at the same time, neither device will work as you will have an IRQ conflict as each pair share the same IRQ. See above

  3. For COM port setting on an internal modem you will have to refer to the manual that came with the modem. Installation varies from mfg. to mfg. Some have jumper settings on the board, others have dip switch selections on the outside of the bracket. Only your manual can help you here.
  4. For motherboards that have serial connections onboard, please refer to your user manual for COM port selection
  5. If you have a serial I/O card again you will have to refer to the manual that came with the board for COM port selections.
  6. If you are not familiar with hardware settings, we recommend you contact your computer dealer or a computer technician. ACTiSYS manufactures infrared devices for operation on a wide variety of computer systems. Details of each system can only be found in the manufacture manual.

If the problem is still unsolved, please contact ACTiSYS technical support.
